Building resilience in communities by supporting adults, young people and children experiencing mental distress
The impact of the pandemic, the cost-of-living crisis and world events has put huge pressure on people’s mental health and resilience. The incidence of anxiety and depression within the Stockport region has doubled since 2020, with self-harm increasing 5-fold. Beacon is a key part of the response to mental health challenges for the people of Stockport, Greater Manchester and beyond, supporting over 3,000 people each year to achieve a happy, fulfilled life, with resilience to face life’s challenges, and confidence to make empowering life decisions.
Key outcomes for people of all ages accessing support at Beacon include reduced levels of depression and anxiety, lower risk of self-harm and suicide attempts, increased levels of confidence and self-esteem, healthier, more stable relationships, and the building of resilience in individuals so they can deal with future challenges.
In 2023, our team of counsellors helped 0ver 3000 individuals to lead fuller and more rewarding lives through the provision of over 12,000 appointments, which were delivered at our Beacon House, via remote delivery and within over 20 schools and community locations.
Delivery included SHINE wellbeing sessions, and also further engaged with young people enabling them to have a voice on their mental health and their say on mental health services through our #StanpOutStigma campaign and project.

Joe's Story
"The day I enquired about Beacon Counselling was the day I took the first steps in the right direction when it came to ME.
“I was really anxious about making an appointment and taking the call, however those feelings disappeared almost immediately. I don’t find it easy to talk about my emotions, but the counsellor immediately put me at ease. I cried my eyes out during our first session, but not once did I feel like I was being judged by her. Beacon Counselling is one of the best things I have done in my life and a large part of that is due to the counsellor. Over the last 6 weeks I feel like I have become I different person. I am much more relaxed and confident, and I no longer make mountains out of mole hills.”
