Empowering you towards positive mental health

At Beacon we know that good mental health can be life changing. Whether you are a teacher in a primary school, a parent, a young person, an employer, or an individual dealing with long term feelings of distress, Beacon is here to help you on your journey towards positive mental health.

Our History

Beacon Counselling has been helping people lead fuller and more rewarding lives for 40 years this year. It was founded in 1984, with counselling initially conducted in doctors’ surgeries by volunteers. To this day a large proportion of our practitioners volunteer their time and expertise to help Beacon reach out to more people every year.

The founding members of the charity who were a part of the ‘Churches Together’ in Bramhall wanted to create an organisation which provided a service to the local community, ensuring that everyone had an equal opportunity to access high quality counselling, regardless of their financial circumstance. From the start, Beacon has prided itself on the quality of all it has done; from monitoring and evaluation, to training and self-development. As a result, it has been sought after for placements by students on counselling courses. In 2008, Beacon Counselling won a Queen’s Award for Voluntary Service, recognition of its contribution to the community over the years and in 2012 Beacon was awarded the prestigious GSK Impact award.

We want to live in a society where everyone is able to enjoy positive mental health and wellbeing.

Our Mission

We combine our passion for people with our mental health expertise, in a way that empowers the people of Stockport, Greater Manchester and beyond to live their best possible life, enjoying good mental health, emotional resilience, and the confidence to make life affirming decisions.

Our Work

We do this by providing a range of accessible mental health and wellbeing services, including counselling, groupwork, training and community projects.

Where we work

We deliver on-site counselling at Beacon House, located in Stockport, provide remote therapy online and deliver across 20+ schools and community locations across the region.

Beacon Counselling is a mental health and wellbeing charity (1109545) dedicated to improving the mental health and emotional resilience of our community. We believe everyone should have an equal chance of good emotional well-being; this is at the core of everything we do.

Founded in 1984 to ensure everyone in the local community had somewhere to turn in times of trouble, regardless of their financial circumstances, we support over 3,000 adults, young people and children each year to improve their mental health and emotional wellbeing and deliver a range of therapy, wellbeing services, group support and targeted projects that empower people with the tools and skills they need to recover and thrive, now and in the future.

Beacon is a leading provider of psychological therapies in Greater Manchester and beyond. The extensive range of skills and experience offered by our pool of qualified paid and volunteer practitioners enables us to help people address a broad spectrum of mental or emotional health issues. Our team responds to a wide range of challenges, supporting people in a way that suits them – we don’t believe in choosing a quick fix over a lasting change and like to get to the root of a problem.
